Here’s Why You Shouldn’t Miss This Year’s Gabii sa Kabilin

Now on its 11th year run, the Gabii sa Kabilin will once again take place to celebrate the Philippines’ National Heritage Month and International Museum Day. This is also in line with Cebu City’s council ordinance declaring the last Friday of May every year as Gabii sa Kabilin or Night of Heritage.

Gabii sa Kabilin is a special Cebu heritage event, it is an annual occasion where people visit museums and heritage sites in one night. From 6 p.m. to midnight guests enjoy the permanent exhibits of participating museums as well as cultural shows, special exhibits, children’s activities, contests, food fairs and other activities. To get to the participating sites, guests walk or ride buses and tartanillas or the horse-drawn carriages. For this year, the Gabii sa Kabilin will be held on May 26, 2017 with some of its highlights you shouldn’t miss:


Additional Sites

Unlike last year, they now have 27 participating sites and three of which are new sites to visit. Including the Democrito T. Mendoza Museum, the Museum of Bicycling and the Museum of Heritage and Folk Art.

Children’s Special Activities

Also in line with the heritage month, children activities inspired by different aspects of Cebuano culture are designed. The following activities are open to children five to 10 years old.

  1. Lubok og mais at Museo Parian sa Sugbo
  2. Lukay Arts at the Archdiocesan Museum of Cebu
  3. Sayaw og Sinulog at the Santo Nino Musuem
  4. Sakay og Tartanilla between Sugbo Chinese Heritage Museum and Fort San Pedro
  5. Duwang Binisaya at Fort San Pedro
  6. Hulbot-hulbot at Casa Gorordo Museum

Blogging/Vlogging Contest

In promotion of the Cebuano heritage, a vlogging contest for bloggers and vloggers alike are taking place. The blogger is tasked to create his own entry by video that captures his experience during the night creatively. For those interested to join, click here.

Gabii sa Kabilin Heritage Hunt

Partnering with Kool Adventure Camp, Gabii sa Kabilin will hold a special heritage hunt. The contest is open to 20 teams of five each who have to complete five sets of challenge located in five out of 10 heritage sites tagged for the hunt—within four hours. For full mechanics, click here.

Gabii sa Kabilin Merchandise

Participants of the Gabii sa Kabilin can also buy limited edition of their merchandise, which will be their keepsake of this memorable night. There are shirts, different kinds of bags, mugs and fridge magnets.

This year’s Gabii sa Kabilin is celebrated in partnerships with the local government units of Cebu City, Mandaue City, Lapu-lapu City and Talisay City, of course spearheaded by the Ramon Aboitiz Foundation, Inc. It will feature 27 cultural destinations in these key cities.

For those interested to participate, tickets are at P150. The ticket provides entry to all sites that guests choose to visit. It also entitles to get a free tarantilla rides and unlimited use of the Gabii sa Kabilin designated buses. For more information, visit their Facebook page.
